Romantic Cocktails

Seems whiskey is oftentimes miscategorized in masculine terms—puts hair on your chest or a man’s drink—which is why I’ve chosen to shake it up. Clair McLafferty, in her book Romantic Cocktails, flips the script on the traditional masculine world of whiskey. Her book challenges the status quo of cocktails and forces a deeper look into the indulgent romance of presentation and combination. Each cocktail heightens your awareness of the sensuality of cocktail creating: the importance of the vessel it’s served in, the care in presenting a perfect garnish, and the allure of the final presented masterpiece.

Clair graciously walks the reader through not only the cocktail but also a brief story of each, further helping the reader to invest in the moment. She introduces us to cocktails such as the Whiskey Daisy, The Elena, and my personal favorite, the French 95—there is just something so decadent, classy, and avant-garde about sipping on rye whiskey mixed with a touch of champagne—with such ease, you race to the index to find more cocktails with the ingredients you love.

Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with pouring yourself a neat dram of your favorite whiskey, but every once in a while, step outside the normal everyday cocktails and try something romantic. Flowers optional—just make sure they are edible.
