Never underestimate the power of cake or chocolate to lift one’s soul. As Mary Poppins trilled, Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…

Jacki Baker and Ron Mancini know a little something about sweets. The couple has run Mother Myrick’s Confectionery in Manchester since 1977. If you haven’t tasted their famed Lemon LuLu cake or divine chocolate toffee buttercrunch, you should. Ditto for the solid chocolate bunnies and chewy, cheerful jelly beans.

As we head into spring, now’s the perfect time to hop on their website and order some treats for yourself, your family, your friends. While you’re at it, why not procure some for the heroes who are delivering your food, dropping packages at your doorstep, and fulfilling your requests for curbside pickups. A little love can go a long way these days.

Speaking of love, a friend’s great-aunt Lucy gifted Jacki and Ron the recipe for a moist lemon pound cake topped with a light lemon glaze. “Of course we named it Lemon LuLu to honor this wonderful woman,” says Jacki. “Customers from around the world tell me that family traditions are built around this cake.” Lemon LuLus are available in two sizes, serving 8 to 10 or 12 to 14.

Spring Celebration bread, aka Panne Jubilare, is another popular choice this time of year. Packed with tender apricots, rum-soaked raisins and slivered almonds, each slice ushers in the season of rebirth, a delicious way to start your morning or as an afternoon snack.

Mother Myrick’s coffee cakes are another welcome treat. Sour Cream Chocolate Chunk comes studded with bittersweet chocolate and walnuts and laced with cinnamon sugar while the Apricot Almond cake is fortified with plump apricots and crunchy almonds. All the baked goods, which are made in their Manchester facility, can be frozen for up to three months.

Buttercrunch remains a perennial favorite. Ron has been making these squares of happiness since the late 1970s. “He learned to make toffee from an older gentleman from whom he bought his candy-making equipment,” Jacki explains. Made with Cabot Creamery butter, the crisp toffee center is dipped in dark or milk chocolate then rolled in ground cashews and almonds. And yes, it’s gluten-free! Available in 7 ounce (approximately 14 pieces) or 1 pound boxes (32 pieces).

Celebrate those large or small occasions in your life with Mother Myrick’s buttercrunch, lemon lulu cake or any of the “made from scratch” chocolates, cakes or pastries. Come into the store or call 802-362-1560. To ship across the country to family, clients or friends: order online – mothermyricks.com or call 888-669-7425.

Sometimes all you need is cake. Or candy. Made with love and delivered right to your door.
