Allenholm Farm - South Hero
Vermont’s oldest commercial apple orchard began in 1870 and has been stewarded by seven generations of the Allen family. “Everyone pitches in as they can, and we’re proud of what we do,” says Ray C. Allen, who now runs the farm with members of the sixth and seventh generations. He equates running the orchard to tending a dairy farm, with a responsibility to take care of the apples from the moment they blossom until the day they’re harvested.
The farm grows 25 acres of apples, cherries, raspberries, and blueberries. A destination for locals and visitors to the Champlain Islands, the bustling farm market and bakery is well provisioned with maple creemees, golden crusted fruit pies, homemade jams, apple butters, applesauce, and cider. “Five varieties of apples go into our cider,” Ray notes.
Honey, maple syrup, and cheeses are also available.
