After long winters and muddy springs, here in Vermont when the creemee signs appear on roadside stands and at country stores and eateries, we know that summer has finally arrived.
When you travel outside our state and mention the word creemee, folks will look at you somewhat puzzled and respond, “You mean soft serve?” It seems that creemee is a Vermont concept. Creemees are not exactly soft serve; they’re made with a higher fat content. And who can dispute that Vermont maple creemees are the unofficial summer state delicacy? However, vanilla and chocolate remain popular as well.
According to the Vermont Dairy Council, there are a bit more than 500 dairy farms in Vermont. Some of these farms produce the ice cream mix for boutique producers of ice cream and creemees who also incorporate the best natural products that Vermont has to offer—from maple to honey to fruit.
