Free Verse Farm & Apothecary, Chelsea

Assorted Free Verse teas include Arise Divine, created from harvested herbs on the farm.

At Free Verse Farm & Apothecary, a pot of small-batch handcrafted Ode to Vermont tea will not disappoint. A luscious herbal tea blend with hints of wild fruit, flowers, mint, and spice, this signature tea offers a poetic homage to our beloved Green Mountain State.

In 2012, Misha Johnson and Taylor Katz found the ideal terroir to tend and cultivate herbs such as nettles, lemon verbena, hawthorn flowers, various mints, and St. John’s Wort for teas, spices, remedies, and other uses. The land is now home to around 100 types of herbs, which serve as the main ingredients in a large line of products. With 38 acres of rolling hills and meadows, both wild and cultivated herbs thrive at Free Verse Farm. The farmers and field crew work with the landscape as it presents itself. The farm also has a drying and production facility alongside the cultivated fields and wildcrafting meadows. The team creates 15 herbal tea blends as well as several blends with organic black and green teas sourced elsewhere that they blend with their own fragrant herbal ingredients to create unique, caffeinated offerings.

Happy calendula flowers reach for sunshine and thrive.

When Misha and Taylor met at Connecticut College during their freshman year, their first date was a shared cup of tea. The hardworking couple gained experience and honed their skills on farms in Europe, Costa Rica, and San Diego before eventually creating Free Verse Farm high in the hills of central Vermont. Taylor, a poet, and Misha, a photographer, and their crew take the utmost care to preserve the essential elements that give each herb its flavor, potency, and magic. In 2023, Free Verse Farm proudly achieved organic certification.

Committed to their passion and their local community near and far, Misha and Taylor sum up their combined aspirations. “Free Verse farming is about working in an intimate, co-creative partnership with the land that follows its natural contours and rhythms. We seek to cultivate abundance and resilience in the landscape by listening and allowing it to inspire our work. We farm not only in straight rows, but also in wild and whimsical spaces of the meadows and forests beyond the fences.”

Located in Chelsea village, Free Verse Farm Shop & Apothecary is well curated with a host of local products. A small team of herbalists creates tea as well as herbal remedies, spices, body care products, and bulk herbs. Free Verse Farm teas and herbs are tended with reverence, crafted with care, and powered by humans and sunshine.
